Use Absence Alerts to notify parents/guardians when a student reaches your school’s absence-day threshold. For example, schools may use 5, 10, 15 or 20 days. Review the list before sending an approved message to several families at once.
Before your first alert: set up the school’s thresholds and templates. These alerts are separate from daily requests asking parents to explain an unexplained absence.
In this guide
1. Open Absence Alerts
- Sign in at uniqueschoolapp.ie.
- Open Attendance Overview → Absence Alerts.
- Use Cumulative Days Over to choose the relevant threshold. Filter by Year or Class if needed.
The list shows the school’s configured thresholds and each student’s cumulative absence days.

Example from the test school. Thresholds may differ in your school.
2. Review and select students
- Review the students and their cumulative absence days.
- Tick the students who should receive this alert. Use the header checkbox only after checking the full selection.
- Untick anyone you want to leave out of this send.
To exclude a student from future threshold alerts: open their profile and turn off Absence Alerts in Settings. This removes them from the threshold-alert list. It is separate from Absence Requests, which controls daily unexplained-absence requests. Only change either setting in line with your school’s agreed process.
3. Preview and send the alert
- Click Send Alerts.
- In Select Absence Alerts Template, choose the appropriate absence-day range. Check the Template Preview, including its title and description.
- Review the wording and selected recipients.
- Click Send only when the students, threshold and wording are correct. Choose Cancel to leave without sending.
The Personal Notification is sent through the school app. Use its delivery, read and response information to plan any follow-up; a read status does not replace a conversation where one is needed.
Keep your school’s process consistent
- Use school-approved wording and review the list before each send.
- Check for previous alerts to avoid unnecessary repeat messages.
- Follow your school’s attendance and reporting procedures. Sending an app alert does not itself complete any separate statutory reporting requirement.
