Set Up Detention: Times, Reasons and Notifications

Prepare detention time slots, reasons, student limits and parent notification settings.

Before you create a detention session, prepare your school’s time slots, detention reasons and notification preferences.

1. Open Detention settings

  1. Sign in to uniqueschoolapp.ie.
  2. Open Detention Manager from the main Dashboard, or Detention in the sidebar.
  3. Click the Settings icon at the top right.

If Detention is unavailable, contact staffsupport@uniqueschools.ie.

2. Choose notification preferences

In Notifications, review:

  • Automatic Personal Notifications: notify parents when a student is added to or updated in detention.
  • Manual Personal Notifications: allow staff to send custom or templated attendance notifications from a detention session.

Check these before assigning students. Automatic notifications can alert parents as detention records are added or updated. Check the reason and any parent-visible note before saving a student's assignment.

3. Add time slots

  1. Open Time Slots.
  2. Enter a Name, From Time and To Time.
  3. Click Add Time Slot.

For example: Lunch time, 12:30–13:00. Use the bin icon beside a slot to remove it when appropriate.

4. Add detention reasons

  1. Open Reasons.
  2. Enter a reason, such as Late, Uniform or Behaviour.
  3. Add a description if needed and click Add Reason.

The description is visible to parents. Where a reason needs student-specific context, add the relevant note when assigning that student rather than using a general description for everyone.

When assigning a student from the Late list, the reason is set to Late. Use the bin icon to remove a reason when appropriate.

5. Set the default student limit

  1. Open Set Limit.
  2. Enter Default Max Students for Detentions.
  3. Click Save Limit.

A value of 0 means unlimited students.
